Frequently asked questions
Getting started
Now or Later moved. How do I bring my lists?
The app moved from tweetingbirds.com/now-and-then to now-or-later.tweetingbirds.com. Your browser keeps each address's lists separately, so open the app at the old address once and tap Move. It opens the new address with this device's lists, and with sync already set up if you use it. Then add the new address to your Home Screen or Dock and remove the old one.
If the Move button doesn't show up, or the Home Screen app opens empty: if you sync, use Copy link for another device on a device that already moved, or an invite link. If you don't, download a backup at the old address (Settings → Backups) and restore it at the new one.
How do I put Now or Later on my Home Screen?
On iPhone or iPad, open the app in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open it in Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu, then Add to Home screen or Install app. On a Mac, use Safari's File → Add to Dock, or Chrome's install button in the address bar.
Once it's installed it opens like any other app and works without an internet connection.
What are Now, Tomorrow and Later for?
They work like pages in a notebook. Now is today's page. Tomorrow is the next page. Later is for things you want to remember someday. You can rename any of them, change their colors, and add your own lists, up to 10.
Everyday use
Why did my Tomorrow todos move into Now?
Each morning, unfinished Tomorrow todos move into Now, the way you'd copy them onto the next page of a notebook. To stop this, open Settings and turn off Move unfinished Tomorrow todos into Now.
Where did my finished todos go?
A checked-off todo stays in its list for the rest of the day, then moves to Done, the last list on the right, grouped by the day you finished it. In Settings you can choose to move finished todos to Done right away instead.
Done keeps everything you've finished. Use its search box and filters to find an old todo.
How do I put a finished todo back?
Find it in Done and tap the ↩ button next to it. It goes back, unchecked, to the list it came from.
How do I move a todo to another list?
Drag it by the ⋮⋮ handle on its left. Or tap ••• on the todo and pick a list under Move to. On a Mac, select a todo with the arrow keys and press ⇧ with ← or →.
I deleted something by mistake. Can I get it back?
Right after you delete, move or check off a todo, a message at the bottom of the screen offers Undo for a few seconds. On a Mac, ⌘Z works while it's showing.
If that has gone, you can restore an earlier backup from Settings. See backups below.
How do I rename, recolor or delete a list?
Tap a list's name to rename it. Tap the colored dot beside the name to change its color. Tap ••• to rename it, move it left or right, or delete it. Deleting a list asks first, and can be undone.
Can I use dark mode?
Yes. Now or Later follows your device's light or dark setting. To pick one for this device only, open Settings and choose Light or Dark under Appearance.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Yes, on a computer. Press ? to see them all. For example, N adds a todo to Now, X checks off the selected todo, and ⌘ , opens Settings.
Sync and backups
How do I use the same lists on my phone and computer?
Sync is optional. Without it, your lists stay on the device you're using. The easiest way to start is an invite link from whoever runs the sync service. Open it on your phone, pick a name for your board if you like, and tap Join. You get a board of your own, and the lists already on that device go onto it.
To add another device, open Settings on the one that already syncs and tap Copy link for another device. Send the link to yourself (AirDrop, Messages to yourself or a note) and open it on the new device.
You can also paste a sync address and access token under Sync with Cloudflare in Settings and tap Save and sync. The first sync on a new device loads your saved board.
Two people can share one board by both using the same link for another device. To keep boards separate, each person joins with their own invite.
My invite link doesn't work.
Each invite link works once and expires after 14 days. If it has been used already (maybe on another device) or has expired, ask the person who sent it for a new one. If you already joined, use Copy link for another device on the device that syncs instead of the invite.
How do I delete my synced data?
If you joined with an invite link, open Settings and tap Delete synced board… under Sync with Cloudflare. This permanently removes your board, its nightly copies and its access token from the sync service, right away. Your other devices stop syncing and keep the lists they show, unless you also tick Also erase the lists on this device. Download a backup first if you might want your lists later.
If your board was set up by hand with a token from the Worker's owner, the button isn't shown. Email hello@tweetingbirds.com and it will be removed.
Can I keep my lists on my own Cloudflare account?
Yes. The sync service is a small Cloudflare Worker that runs on Cloudflare's free plan. The guide to running your own sync Worker walks through it in about fifteen minutes. Then put your Worker's address and token in Settings, or invite your family from it.
What does the badge at the top mean?
- On this device: sync is off, and your lists are only here.
- Synced: everything is saved, with the name of the board you're syncing with.
- Syncing…: changes are on their way.
- Offline: there's no connection right now. Keep going; your changes are saved on this device and sync when you're back online. A small amber ring marks todos that haven't synced yet.
- Sync problem: the sync service refused, often because the token is wrong. Tap the badge for details, or check the token in Settings. If your board was deleted from another device, sync turns off and the badge goes back to On this device.
A todo changed back after I edited it. Why?
If the same todo or list was changed on two devices, the newest change wins. When your change is the one that lost, a message says so, for example “Buy milk” was also changed on another device. Edit it again and it will sync.
How do backups work?
In Settings under Backups, Download backup saves a file with every list, todo and Done item. On a phone, choose Save to Files. Restore from file… puts everything in that file back. Download CSV makes a spreadsheet you can open in Numbers or Excel, but it can't be restored.
When sync is on, a copy of your board is also saved every night and kept for 30 days. Settings lists those copies, and you can restore or download any of them. Before any restore, one more copy is saved so the restore can be undone the same way.
How do I erase everything?
Your lists live in your browser's storage for this site. To erase them from a device, clear the website data for this site in your browser settings, or delete the Home Screen app. On iPhone, go to Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced → Website Data.
If you use sync, your board is also stored by the sync service. See How do I delete my synced data?
About the app
Does it cost anything?
No. Now or Later is free, with no ads and no accounts.
How do I get the newest version?
Updates arrive on their own. If one comes out while the app is open, a message says so, and Settings shows a Reload button. See What's New for what changed.
